Lake Waikaremoana Track (Located in the Lake Waikaremoana area and Te Urewera in the East Coast region)

Lake Waikaremoana is part of the Great Walk family. You’ll find this one more of a backcountry, off the beaten track experience. Be immersed into stunning natural wilderness and welcomed into the homeland of Ngai Tūhoe. Leave with a sense of connection, rejuvenation and hauora (wellness).

Trace the shoreline of Lake Waikaremoana, the 'sea of rippling waters.' Pass giant podocarp trees and remote beaches, and enjoy breathtaking views from Panekire Bluff.

Closest towns: Wairoa, Gisborne, Rotorua
Start/Finish: This is one-way walk between Onepoto and Hopuruahine. Both ends are accessed by water taxi from Aniwaniwa.

Whanganui Journey (Located in the Whanganui National Park in the Manawatu/Whanganui region)

Explore the scenic Whanganui River by paddling down it through a landscape of remote hills and bush clad valleys. This trip is suitable for people with good fitness and confidence with a canoe.

Distance: 87 or 145 km
Location: Whanganui National Park, south-west North Island
Closest towns: Whanganui, Taumarunui, Ohakune
Start/ Finish: This river trip starts in Taumarunui or Whakahoro and ends in Pipiriki.

Tongariro National Park (Located in the Central North Island region)

Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual World Heritage area. This status recognises the park's important Māori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.

From late October to April, explore the volcanic heart of Tongariro National Park, a landscape of stark glacial contrasts and alpine views. From May to late October, it can be cold and wet, with ice, snow, avalanches and short daylight hours - only go if you have navigation and alpine skills.

Journey through dramatic (and active!) volcanic landscapes, glacial valleys, native beech forest, alpine meadows and emerald coloured lakes. Wind past Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe.

Abel Tasman Coast Track (Located in Abel Tasman National Park in the Nelson/Tasman region)

Enjoy the mild climate, golden beaches and lush coastal native bush on the Abel Tasman Coast Track.

Take in golden beaches, crystal clear waters and lush coastal forest. Walk the whole track or kayak between different locations.

Heaphy Track (Located in the Kahurangi National Park in the Nelson/Tasman and West Coast regions)

Travel through expansive tussock downs, lush forests and nīkau palms to the roaring seas of the West Coast. Mountain bikes are allowed between 1 May and 30 November.

Cross rivers and streams through beautiful beech forest, rolling areas of red tussock and podocarp forest before emerging amongst nikau palm-fringed coastline and the roaring seas of the Wild West Coast.

Paparoa Track and Pike29 Memorial Track (Located in Paparoa National Park in the West Coast region)

Paparoa Track crosses the Paparoa Range. It takes you through alpine tops, limestone karst landscapes and thriving rainforests, and provides breath-taking views.

Journey through lush rainforest, limestone karst landscapes and over alpine tops on the Paparoa Track. This newly constructed track can be hiked or mountain biked.

Location: Paparoa Range, West Coast of the South Island
Closest towns: Blackball, Greymouth and Punakaiki
Start/Finish: This is a one-way walk or bike ride between Smoke-Ho car park near Blackball and Pororari River car park (walkers) or Waikori Road (bikers) near Punakaiki. Transport services are available to and from the track.

Routeburn Track (Located in Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park in the Otago and Fiordland regions)

From November to April, weave through meadows, reflective tarns and alpine gardens, and be rewarded with spectacular vistas over vast mountain ranges and valleys. From May to October, it can be cold and wet, with ice, snow and short daylight hours - only attempt if you have alpine, navigation and river crossing skills.

Traverse the magnificent Southern Alps/ Kā Tiritiri o te Moana of New Zealand. Walk below majestic peaks, through beautiful beech forest and above vast valleys.

Duration: 2-4 days

Location: Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks, south-west South Island
Closest towns: Queenstown, Te Anau
Start/Finish: This is a one-way walk between the Routeburn Shelter near Queenstown and the Divide Shelter near Te Anau. Shuttles and vehicle relocations are available between both ends.

Milford Track (Located in Fiordland National Park in the Fiordland region)

From late October to April, experience 'the finest walk in the world' - along valleys carved by glaciers, through ancient rainforests and past cascading waterfalls. From May to late October, it can be cold and wet, with ice, snow and short daylight hours - only go if you have alpine, river crossing and navigation skills.

Experience the grandeur of rugged mountain peaks, sheer canyons and majestic waterfalls. Walk beside pristine rivers and in lush rainforest before crossing Mackinnon Pass and reaching spectacular Milford Sound.

Location: Fiordland National Park, south-west South Island
Closest towns: Te Anau and Queenstown
Start/Finish: This is a one-way walk from the head of Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. Transport services are available to and from the track.

Kepler Track (Located in the Fiordland National Park and Lake Manapouri area and Laek Te Anau area in the Fiordland region)

From late October to April, walk past the beech-forested shorelines of lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, to tussock-covered ridgelines with spectacular alpine vistas. From May to late October, it can be cold and wet, with ice, snow and short daylight hours - only attempt if you have alpine, navigation and river crossing skills.

Walk through the gentle beech-forested shores of Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri over exposed alpine tussock lands and Mt Luxmore with panoramic views.
